About
The idea of our church began in a Thursday evening prayer meeting. Around the first week of June of 1932 a bunch of Christians met at the home of Lew Wallace in the East Moreland Addition for a prayer meeting. Someone mentioned the need for a local mission and the idea began to grow.
Two weeks later, Tom Watkins and J.T. Bridges found an empty corner lot in the addition and a quickly the men began construction. And on July 14, about six weeks after that first prayer meeting…they worshiped in new East Moreland Mission.
First Baptist Church of Longview sponsored the mission until September 28, 1941, when the mission voted to become a church. And on October 26, newly called Pastor, Dr. Glen Naefus preached the first sermon at Texas Avenue Baptist Church. Joe Miller led the congregation in the opening song, “When the roll is called up yonder” and Dr. Naefus brought the message from Matthew 18:13-20.
In September 1952, 3.9 acres were purchased on Alpine Street and on July 25, 1954, construction began on VVBC. Pastor J.W. Lasater preached the first message in the new auditorium on January 19, 1955. It should be noted that Brother Lasater is the father of our current Associate Pastor of Music and Education Mark Lasater and the father of our pianist Nan Moon, who the wife of our Pastor, Paul Moon.
